Buffalo Lawn Grass

Buffalo: Coarse, Not very thirsty (more water wise), Surface growing grass, Broad leaf, Not soft, Likes sun.

USES: Provides a thick turf for shades landscapes where not mowed and used with LM grass or Shade-over, at beach cottages (low maintenance, drought resistant. If not watered or mowed, don't expect it to look good.

DESCRIPTION: Although it is a favourable grass in many areas it can also form dense stands and displace native species. A creeping perennial with extensive runners that is well suited to sandy soils. It forms a dense, coarse mat and is hardy and persistent. It is drought-, heat-, and cold resistant (with no traffic). It is also often used in conjunction with LM grass (a shade grass). It is largely propagated from sod or sod plugs although it can be established from numerous branching stolons and occasionally produces rhizomes. Roots are also numerous and thoroughly occupy the soil. The numerous stolons and roots form a dense sod. Buffalo grass roots are finer than those of most plains grasses, being less than 1 mm in diameter. Slow-growing, coarse bladed grey-green grass grows less than 13 cm high. Drought and heat tolerant. Is tolerant of humidity. Good cold resistance; dormant from April to September. It also provides a thick turf used for low pH soils, for example sand dunes and shade, and can’t handle traffic.

SEASON: Warm season, + 20°C. The grass grows well in full sun and is able to grow in light semi shade areas if cut on a high setting.

SOIL NEEDS: A moist, sandy, well-drained soil is best, pH ranges from 5.0 - 7.0 are good.

SUN REQUIREMENTS: Full sun to partial shade. Has a high wearability and ability to recuperate well - nonetheless it has a poor shade tolerance due to low pH under trees.

CARE AND USE: Susceptible to fungus (which weakens and yellows the turf, army worms and caterpillars). Handles salt spray and heat. Can mow only 2 - 3 times a year if there is no traffic or water. Mow 1,25 - 6,25 cm high.

WATER REQUIREMENT: Water well for several weeks to help roots settle. Water lightly once established.
